BAMBERG – Bamberg police served multiple arrest warrants on a Smoak Street woman on June 25 in connection with alleged illegal conduct involving four juveniles.

According to the affidavits, the 46-year-old allegedly committed four counts of assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature by striking the four children on Dec. 12. 2008.

According to the incident report, one child received a bruise on the back and another was struck with a closed fist in the head. The woman allegedly struck a third child and then a fourth, leaving a handprint welt on that child’s body.

In addition, the woman was charged with three counts of unlawful conduct toward a child for incidents which allegedly occurred between Feb. 1, 2008 and Dec. 18, 2008. In all three cases, the juveniles gave accounts of sexual acts taking place while the children and siblings were present, the report said. Instances of fighting in front of the children were also alleged.

In other cases:

* A Sparrow Court man was arrested for criminal domestic violence on July 1 after he allegedly tried to choke his spouse. When officers arrived at the residence, they spoke to the victim, a 23-year-old woman, who said the two had begun arguing about $5. When she threw a radio to the floor, the 26-year-old man began to choke her around the neck, the report said.

The man was taken to jail, and his spouse was given a victim’s impact statement.

* Police issued a summons for court for assault and battery to a Mill Street man and a Creekside Apartment woman after a verbal argument became physical on June 28 Both the victim and the subject sustained “very minute damages,” the report said.

* A case of assault and battery will go to Family Court after a 13-year-old boy was accused of throwing fireworks and then rocks at a 58-year-old man. The alleged incident took place at the juvenile’s grandmother’s house on Swan Drive on June 26. The victim told police that the boy threw the fireworks first and that he, the man, then threw a bottle at the teen. The juvenile then threw rocks at him, the man alleged. The juvenile was charged with assault and battery.

* A suspect who failed to stop for a blue light crashed the vehicle he was driving as he sped down Carlisle Street on June 25. Officers clocked the driver going 49 in a 35 mph zone and attempted to catch up with him. The driver then passed another vehicle in an intersection along the two-lane street, the report said. When officers caught up with the red Ford Taurus, the driver was missing and the car had struck a telephone pole and plowed into a building, the report said.

The Bamberg and Denmark Fire Departments responded to the scene as the car was smoking and the power line wires were down. An ID with the suspect’s name on it was found in the car, which was owned by the suspect’s brother, according to the incident report. The report charges the suspect with failure to stop for a blue light.

* An unknown person tried to break into a vehicle in the parking lot of the Home Federal Savings and Loan on June 28, according to police. The back window of the car was broken out, and the ignition was damaged when a screw driver was used in an attempt to start the car, the report said. Estimated damage to the car was $500.

* Police are investigating an incident involving arson which occurred on June 27. A woman on Kennedy Street called police to say someone had spread her charcoal out on her front porch and put lighter fluid over the front door and ignited it, the report said. The woman’s son saw the flames and was able to put out the fire, but damage was done to the top of the porch front door, the report indicated.

* Police arrested a Blackville man on June 29 after he gave false information about his identity. The 27-year-old was a passenger in a car which police stopped because several occupants were not wearing their seat belts, the report said. Once the man’s identity was verified, a check showed that he had outstanding warrants on him in Pennsylvania. As officers were arresting the man for giving false information and seat belt violation, he began to curse and admitted that he had been drinking, the report said. He was additionally charged with public disorderly conduct – public drunk.

* A Denmark man was arrested on multiple charges after police initially stopped him for speeding at around 2:30 a.m. on June 25 on U.S. 301 near EZ Shop No. 1.

When officers initiated the stop, the 53-year-old man got out of the car immediately. As officers asked for and checked the man’s driver’s license, registration and proof of insurance, they noticed several illegal items in the vehicle, according to the incident report.

The driver was arrested for driving under suspension, simple possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, operating an uninsured vehicle, failure to register, open container and speeding.

The man claimed that a crack pipe and film canister with a bag of green leafy substance in it belonged to someone else, the report said. He also kept asking to call another officer to get that person to tell the responding officers that “he was not a bad guy and that this was all a misunderstanding,” the incident report said.

In other cases:

* Officers were dispatched to Pine Street on June 17 regarding dogs that were running loose. Police were notified by a man who had called them previously about dogs. The complainant said the subject’s dogs were near his fence line, aggravating his own dogs, the report said.

Officers had spoken to the complainant and the subject about three weeks earlier about the dogs, but a report was not made because of the neighbors wanting to resolve the dispute on their own.

The officers wrote a citation to the owner of the loose dogs for “dogs running at large.” As the officer arrived at the home of the subject to serve the citation, he noticed two large dogs on Pine Street. As the officer got out of the patrol car to take photos of the dogs, one dog charged him as he stood in the street. The officer used pepper spray to protect himself from attack, the report said.

* Police arrested a Friendly Street man for criminal domestic violence on June 22 after he allegedly slapped the woman he lives with in the face, according to an incident report. Officers were called to the residence, where the 22-year-old woman told them she and the man had been arguing about a previous incident involving her child.

The woman said the man had been poking her in the forehead and when she slapped his hands away, he slapped her across the face, the report said. The man had then left, and police later found him in the neighborhood. The man ran, and officers pursued and arrested him for CDV and failure to comply.

* Police arrested a Bamberg man for driving under suspension, operating an uninsured vehicle and multiple traffic violations after stopping him for not wearing his seat belt on June 24. An officer at the corner of Calhoun and Weimer spotted the motorist and made a traffic stop. The man was taken to the Bamberg County Detention Center, and his vehicle was towed.

* A Hampton man was arrested during a traffic stop after he gave false information regarding his name on June 24. Officers stopped the 19-year-old after they noticed he was not wearing a seat belt while driving on Railroad Avenue.

* Police are investigating an attempted break-in at Main Street Methodist Church on Main Highway on June 14. The incident was the second church break-in within a week, the report said.
