S.C. polyester film plant to close; 200 to lose jobs
By The Associated Press Wednesday, July 29, 2009FLORENCE, S.C. (AP) — A South Carolina plant that made polyester film for nearly 50 years will close by the end of next summer, leaving more than 200 workers without a job.
The Morning News of Florence reported that officials at DuPont Teijin Film plant told workers Tuesday the Florence plant will be shuttered in September 2010 and demolished.
The company says the plant will shut down in phases. About 65 workers will lose their jobs this September, an additional 70 workers will be let go in March and the final 90 employees will work until the plant closes.
The plant opened in 1961, making plastic film used in VCR tapes and potato chip bags. DuPont says the demand for the film has fallen and the work will be move to its Hopewell, Va., facility.
