Orangeburg students attend summer arts academy
Saturday, August 01, 2009CONWAY -- Orangeburg-Wilkinson High School students Davina Elizabeth and Mia Janay recently attended the 2009 Summer Academy for the Talented and Gifted in the Visual Arts at Coastal Carolina University.
The program is part of the summer arts academy, a residential fine arts program taught on the university's campus with a staff of university and public school educators that provides opportunities for students to engage in the arts in ways that are not available to them throughout their regular school year. The visual arts academy includes classes in drawing, portraiture, painting, sculpture, photography, printmaking and graphic design. Special events included group projects, museum field trips and sand sculpture.
A culminating exhibit of student art works was held in the Rebecca Randall Bryan Art Gallery at Coastal Carolina University. Elizabeth, a sophomore at O-W, was selected by Director Penelope Miller to co-direct the exhibit. Students expressed themselves in 3-D sculptures, group sculptures, watercolors, acrylic murals and self-portraits, and mixed media.
The show featured one piece of art by each student and four collaborative drawings from the group as a whole. Janay, a junior at O-W, contributed to the exhibit with watercolor paintings.
