Edisto’s Palmer ‘ecstatic’ about proposed region realignment

Different region, same familiar foes.

It’s what the South Carolina High School League’s proposed two-year realignment plan has presented for Edisto High School. Barring an appeal by Aug. 14 or last-minute adjustments, Edisto will move next year from Region 5-AA to Region 7-AA and compete with Pelion, Silver Bluff, Barnwell, Wade Hampton and old rival Swansea, which makes the transition down from Class 3-A after four years.

Edisto athletics director and head football coach Andy Palmer was “ecstatic” about the realignment, citing the closer travel and potential for strong home attendance gates given the familiarity of the opponents.

Also on the move are Woodland from Region 6-A to 8-A and Allendale-Fairfax from Region 5-A to Region 6-A.

Orangeburg-Wilkinson will remain in Region 5-AAAA, although rivals Dutch Fork and Irmo will move to the Upstate in Region 4-A. South Aiken will replace the two schools, leaving O-W with five non-region games to schedule in football.

O-W Athletics Director Charles Gregory indicated Tuesday the school was making contact with other T&D Region schools to possibly fill those games. This could potentially lead to the resumption of the football series with fellow Orangeburg County school Edisto.

“I’m open to that and I have talked to Charles,” Palmer said. “We have to sit down with (head football coach Tommy) Brown and work things out.”

The Bruins hold a 4-2 edge in the series with the Cougars, winning the last meeting during the 2007 season 20-19 in double overtime in Cordova.
