The City of Orangeburg Parks and Recreation Department is gearing up to offer a new type of entertainment for the community. Movies at Mirmow, a series of outdoor movies shown on a 30-foot inflatable screen, will begin at Mirmow Field on Saturday, Aug. 22. Additional movies will follow in September and October.

On Aug. 22, families can enjoy "Shark Tale," the animated family comedy featuring the voice talents of Will Smith, Angelina Jolie, Robert De Niro and Renee Zellweger. People of all ages will enjoy the tale of Oscar, a fast-talking little fish who dreams big. Oscar's big dreams land him in hot water when a little white lie turns him into an unlikely hero. At first, Oscar's fellow fish believe his story, but then it becomes clear that Oscar's tale about defending the Reef is untrue. Enjoy Oscar's underwater adventure as he tries to wiggle his way out of trouble. Set to a soundtrack that includes the tunes "Car Wash" and "Got To Be Real," young and old alike will enjoy this night at the movies. The film is rated PG.

Sept. 26 brings an all-star cast including Robin Williams, Julia Roberts and Dustin Hoffman in the PG adventure "Hook." Peter Pan (Williams) has grown up, married Wendy's granddaughter, and has become a cutthroat merger and acquisitions lawyer. Capt. Hook (Hoffman) kidnaps Peter Pan's children and takes them to Neverland. With the help of Tinkerbell (Roberts) and the Lost Boys, Peter returns to Neverland to battle Capt. Hook once again. This movie was nominated for five Oscars and is sure to be a crowd-pleaser.

The final movie in the series is "ET: The Extra Terrestrial," to be shown Oct. 10. This Steven Spielberg film stars Henry Thomas and Drew Barrymore. Elliott, a 10-year old boy played by Thomas, helps a stranded alien botanist return home. This heart-warming PG-rated classic is a must-see film for everyone.

Movies will begin at dusk. Gates will open at 7 p.m. Aug. 22 and Sept. 26 and at 6 p.m. Oct. 10. Patrons will sit in the stands, and the movie screen will be placed on the ball field. Admission is $2 per person, and drinks and snacks will be available at the concession stand for a nominal fee.

Sponsors for Movies at Mirmow include the Department of Public Utilities, Orangeburg County Chamber of Commerce, Orangeburg County Development Commission, Plain or Fancy Sign Co., Worth Monument Co. and 100.3 WORG FM, Garris Communications.
