ST. MATTHEWS -- A Columbia woman died in a single vehicle accident Sunday morning.

Sam Betty Louise Ball, 41, 4824 Smallwood Road, was traveling west on S.C. Highway 6 about four miles east of St. Matthews around 10:21 a.m. when she lost control of her 2004 Ford.

Ball rode off the right side of the road, overcorrected, came back across the roadway and traveled off the left side of the road and struck a tree, S.C. Highway Patrol Lance Cpl. Scot Edgeworth said.

Calhoun County Coroner Donnie Porth said Ball, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was pronounced dead at the scene from a fractured cervical spine.

There were no other occupants of the vehicle and no other vehicles were involved in the collision.

Toxicology results were pending, said Porth.

The accident was still under investigation.
