New theme park coaster to honor Dale Earnhardt
By The Associated Press Thursday, August 27, 2009FORT MILL, S.C. (AP) — A theme park on the North Carolina-South Carolina border says it will add a new roller coaster honoring the late Dale Earnhardt.
Multiple media outlets reported Wednesday that “The Intimidator” will debut at Carowinds in 2010. The ride is 23 stories tall and can reach speeds of up to 80 mph. It will be the tallest and fastest coaster in the Southeast.
Carowinds marketing director John Taylor said the $23 million coaster is the largest single investment in the theme park’s history. Jeff Steiner of Dale Earnhardt Inc. says the ride celebrates Earnhardt’s legendary career.
Earnhardt died in a crash at the Daytona 500 in 2001.
