Report: Hutto won't challenge DeMint

The New York Times is reporting that state Sen. Brad Hutto, D-Orangeburg, will not run against Republican U.S. Sen. Jim DeMint next year.

Hutto told The Times and Democrat in August that he was mulling a run for DeMint’s seat. Attempts to reach Hutto for comment Monday were unsuccessful.

The N.Y. Times article quoted Phil Bailey, political director of the state Senate Democratic Caucus, as saying Hutto decided against mounting a campaign.

That leaves DeMint without any Democratic opposition as yet.

Former S.C. Democratic Party Chairman Joe Erwin ruled out running against DeMint in April.

That’s when Hutto began contemplating a run, saying DeMint’s views were out of sync with South Carolina and it was time for a change.

Hutto reportedly met with the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee officials in Washington last month to discuss a potential bid, according to the Washington Post.
