T&D Quick Hits: Friday Night Lights
By T&D Staff Saturday, September 05, 2009Hammond 7, Orangeburg Prep 3
COLUMBIA -- Adams Holmes was a heart-broken man Friday night.
Against Hammond, the top-ranked SCISA team in the state, Holmes' Orangeburg Prep Indians nearly pulled out the victory. But, on third-and-goal from the 2-yard line with 9 seconds to play, Holmes Indians' had a snap bounce off the shoulder of back Thacker Staley, who was in motion. The Indians recovered, but time ran out on their chances of pulling off the upset.
"You know ... I'm hurting," Holmes said. "The guys are hurting. They played their hearts out. I told them, 'hey, you learn from it and you get better from it.' It hurt tonight, but we have a big game coming up against Heathwood so we better get better. The defense did an outstanding job tonight. Thacker Staley was just amazing in the middle. He did a great job stopping their stretch zone. He played his heart out on defense. It's nobody's fault. We just didn't quite seal the deal."
Walker Smith led the Indians offense with 26 carries for 101 yards. Quarterback Cap Thackston was 10 of 14 passing for 78 yards. Kicker Evan Salley kicked OPS' field goal, a 32-yarder in the second quarter.
Les Cotter led Hammond, rushing 29 times for 128 yards and scoring the team's only touchdown.
OPS drops to 1-1 on the year.
"I'm extremely proud of (the team)," Holmes said. "We asked them to go out there and play 48 minutes of football and they did that. We came up a little short, but we drove 78 yards to get down there. We went right down the field on them. We are still learning the offense. We are a little young, but they did enough for us to win tonight."
