Twiggs' exhibit commemorates Hugo anniversary

SPARTANBURG -- "Hurricane," an exhibition of nine batik paintings by Leo Twiggs that were inspired by Hurricane Hugo, will be on display in the Milliken Gallery at Converse College in Spartanburg through Sept. 24.
Twiggs completed the paintings, which feature a wax-resist dyeing technique used on textiles, in 1990, and a Greenville collector purchased the entire group soon after they were hung. Later that year, South Carolina Educational Television featured the paintings in a program called "For the People." The paintings, titled "East Wind Suite," were the first series of art works ever created about a hurricane.
While many of the Twiggs works have been exhibited and published separately, the Converse exhibit will be a rare showing of the complete series. Several other batik paintings by Twiggs will also be displayed. The exhibit commemorates the 20th anniversary of the 1989 storm.
Twiggs is distinguished artist-in-residence at Claflin University. A book of selected reproductions of his art work, titled "Messages from Home," will be published later this year.
