The Orangeburg branch of the NAACP is set to hold the Centennial Freedom Fund Banquet Celebration on Sept. 19.

The event will coincide with similar celebrations from NAACP branches across the nation as the organization commemorates its 100th year of existence.

"I think this will be a great opportunity to reflect on things that happened in the past and where we've come and where we are now," said Sharon Daniels, branch secretary.

Former state Supreme Court Chief Justice Ernest Finney will be the keynote speaker. Comedian Coy Lasone will serve as the banquet's host. Daniels noted Lasone was recently the opening act for legendary R&B singer Aretha Franklin.

The branch has focused on celebrating the NAACP's milestone anniversary this year, Daniels said.

The theme of the event is "Celebrating 100 Years of Opening Doors to the American Dream."

"We as a race have come such a long way and I just think it would be good for everybody to celebrate," she said.

Tickets for the banquet are $50 each and may be purchased at M&S Health and Beauty Supply, located at 1133 Russell St.; Dean's LTD, located at 1185 Russell St.; or Jamison Pharmacy on Goff Avenue. For additional information, contact Daniels at 803-308-1072.

The event will start at 6 p.m. at Williams Grand Lodge in Orangeburg.
