Pantherettes Win First Conference Match of Season


The Pantherettes, coming off a four set loss to Paine College Friday, rebounded to defeat a solid Clark-Atlanta University team in straight sets 25-21, 25-19, 27-25, Sunday afternoon.

“Friday was an eye-opener for the team as Paine came out with intensity and kept it throughout the entire match,” Claflin player Faith Simmons said. “Today, we would not let that match keep us down. We kept our composure in the close final set and came away with the victory.”

Simmons led the Pantherettes offensively with 13 kills while Toi Haynes-Shelman collected 19 assists. Trinisha Harp, the leader of this year’s team tallied 10 kills. The Pantherettes (2-1, 1-1) hit the road September 17-21 in Albany Ga., for the SIAC Crossover Tournament.

Lady Raiders beat Blackville-Hilda


BAMBERG – Katharina Peters had 13 points as B-E defeated Blackville 25-6, 25-15, 16-25, 25-14. Miranda Murdough finished with 12 points and four aces. Gloria Wheeler had 11 points while Kritofia Smart provided seven points, five kills and two aces. Alexis Toomer added four points, four aces and two kills.

Bamberg-Ehrhardt (1-2) will travel to Denmark-Olar on Thursday for a tri-match against D-O and Allendale-Fairfax.

Lady Indians’ win streak snapped

Orangeburg Prep fell to region foe Robert E. Lee 17-25, 20-25, 13-25 ending their 8–game winning streak.

Sallie Covington led the way for the Lady Indians with five kills and a block. Shiloh Burgreen added four kills, an assist and a block in the loss.

OPS (8-1, 0-1) will take on Heathwood Hall in Columbia at 5 p.m. on Wednesday.

Branchville sweeps Lake Marion

BRANCHVILLE – The Lady Yellow Jackets swept the Lady Gators 25-12, 25-16, 25-18.

Miranda Nichols led the way for Branchville with eight points, seven assists and five aces.

The Lady Yellow Jackets (5-3) will host Bowman Academy at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday.

HHA downs First Baptist

CHARLESTON – Holly Hill Academy defeated First Baptist in three sets 25-13, 25-19, 25-23.

Wehme Carolyn Hutto was the leading scorer with 23 digs, 14 kills and five aces. Emily Watkins had 12 digs, eight aces, four kills, three blocks. Sara Shuler had nine kills, five digs, two aces and two blocks. Katie Dickson added 18 digs and a kill. Chelsea Nester provided 12 digs, five kills and Kaitlin Rush had 21 assists, four kills, two aces and two blocks.

HHA (9-1, 3-0) will host Thomas Sumter today at 5:30 p.m.

O-W suffers loss to Edisto

Orangeburg-Wilkinson fell to the Lady Cougars 25-22, 25-17.

Shaquitta Anderson led O-W with five service points. Chelsie Gardner had four points in the loss. Shydasia Gadson finished with five points. Shameka Randolph had five points with six kills and three blocks

O-W (6-7) will host North Augusta today 5:30 p.m.

JV Volleyball

Branchville defeats Lake Marion

BRANCHVILLE – The Lady Yellow Jackets dominated their matchup against the Lady Gators 25-0, 25-10.

Caroline Murray was the leader for the Lady Yellow Jackets with 30 points and 13 aces.

Branchville improves to 4-0 and will play on Monday at 4:30 in Santee against Lake Marion.

First Baptist tops HHA

CHARLESTON – The Lady Raiders fell to First Baptist 14-25, 25-21, 22-23.

Abby Winquest had five kills, four aces and three digs. Bailey Nesdahl finished with two aces, two assists, a kill and a dig. Mayna Cason was credited with three digs, two aces and a kill.

HHA (5-3, 3-0) will travel to Moncks Corner to face St. John’s in a region contest. The match will begin at 4 p.m. on Thursday.

O-W beats Edisto

Nyilah Jamison-Myers led O-W in victory with 16-service points and five assists. Jasmine Coulter added five-service points for O-W and Danesha Guinyard had six-service points.

O-W (1-3) hosts North Augusta tonight.

Dantzler places 49th in tourney


PHILADELPHIA, MISS. - Orangeburg native Marion Dantzler posted a four-day total of one-under-par 287 to finish tied for 49th at the Silver Star Hotel and Casino Golf Classic which concluded Sunday.

Russell Knox overcame a one stroke deficit to finish at 24-under-par 264 to notch his first career NGA Hooters Tour win at Dancing Rabbit Golf Club. The Scottish born Knox carded rounds of 65-65-66-68 en route to a two stroke victory over third round leader Joe Affrunti (Crystal Lake, IL) who finished at 22-under-par 266.
