S.C. State Soccer

S.C. State Soccer Team Resumes Schedule Wednesday

The South Carolina State soccer team will resume its 2009 schedule Wednesday when the Lady Bulldogs travel to Rock Hill, SC to take on Big South member Winthrop in a 7 p.m. match at Eagle Field.

The match can be seen live via the Big South Website. Interested persons can visit www.BigSouthSports.com and view the match at a cost of $4.95. Click Here if you would like to purchase the game. The game can be purchased immediately and up to one hour past game time.

Coach Glad Bugariu’s team, idle the last nine days, will be seeking its fourth consecutive victory. The SC State women, 5-4 on the season and off to the best start in the program’s history, won their last three matches, including a dramatic 1-0 overtime win over Wofford Sept. 21 at Oliver C. Dawson Stadium.

The Eagles, who defeated Francis Marion 2-0 in their last outing Sept. 25, are 3-4-1 on the season.

Freshman Dani Benton, one of 16 newcomers on the 2009 squad, has six goals to lead SC State. Junior Sasha Bender and freshman Alejandra Chirino have scored five and four goals, respectively, for the Lady Bulldogs.

Following Wednesday’s match at Winthrop, SC State begins its Great West Conference (GWC) schedule with road matches at New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) Oct. 2 and Delaware State Oct. 4.

The next home match will be against GWC foe NJIT Oct. 9 at 7 p.m.

Volleyball

Edisto takes two from Ridgeland

CORDOVA - The Lady Cougars swept Ridgeland in doubleheader action. Edisto took the first match 25-19, 25-5. The second matched ended 25-13, 25-6 in favor of the Lady Cougars

Ashley Gallman led Edisto with 19 points and eight assists. Taylor Smoak had 14 points, two kills and a block. Anna Salley tallied 12 points, eight assists and five kills. Hailey Carson provided 11 points and six kills. Laura Nix added seven points while Jennifer Joyner collected six points and two kills. Lisa Zanini had two points and a kill. Willetta Anthony had two kills Quinique Benjamin had one kill.

Caitlyn Bishop finished with three kills.

Edisto (13-0) will play Thursday in Barnwell against the Lady Warhorses at 6 p.m.

Orangeburg Prep 3, Florence Christian 0

Orangeburg Prep defeated Florence Christian in SCISA varsity volleyball 25-15, 25-17 and 25-16 on Tuesday.

Leading the Lady Indians (12-2, 2-1) were Taylor Mims with six kills and four digs, Annie Westlund with 25 assists, eight aces and three kills, Brandi McRae with eight kills, four kills and three aces, Sallie Covington with seven kills, three aces, three two blocks and Shiloh Burgreen had five kills and two digs.

OPS plays host to Wilson Hall at 5 p.m. Thursday.

Holly Hill Academy 3, Faith Christian 0

SUMMERVILLE - The Lady Raiders extended their region winning streaking to seven by defeating Faith Christian 25-12, 25-6, 25-16.

Wehme Carolyn Hutto 14 kills, five digs and four aces. Chelsea Nester had 10 assists, seven aces and five digs. Katlin Rush had six aces, four assists, two digs and a kill. Sara Shuler had four aces, four digs, three kills and an assist. Emily Watkins four kills, four digs and an ace.

HHA (15-1, 7-0) will travel to Dorchester Academy at 5 p.m. on Thursday.

Holly Hill Academy 2, Orangeburg Prep 0 (First Game, Monday)

Holly Hill Academy 2, Branchville 0 (Second Game, Monday)

HOLLY HILL -- HHA defeated OPS 30-28, 25-16 and Branchville 25-18, 25-19 in tri-match action.

Against OPS, HHA was led by Wehme Carolyn Hutto who had 13 digs, nine kills and four aces. Chelsey Nester added eight digs, six kills and two aces; Emily Watkins had six digs, one ace, one block and one kill. Fara Shuler had three kills, two aces, two blocks and one dig and Katelyn Rush added 13 assists, five digs, three kills and an ace for HHA.

In the win over Branchville, Hutto led the way with 11 kills, nine digs, three aces and a block; Katie Dickson had eight digs, one kill and an assist, Nester had six digs, one kill and an ace; Shuler had five kills, two blocks and two digs, Watkins had four digs, two kills, two blocks and an ace and Rush had 11 assists, four digs, one kill and an ace.

Tennis

Irmo 6, Orangeburg-Wilkinson 0

IRMO - The Yellow Jackets swept the Bruinettes Tuesday in region action. Below are the results:

Orangeburg Prep extends their winning streak to 12 after knocking off Florence Christian 25-7, 21-25, 25-18.

Toni Salsgiver led the Lady Indians with nine points four aces. Tatum Watford had seven points and three aces. Haley Craven added six points and three aces.

OPS (12-0) will host Wilson at 4 p.m. on Thursday.

Holly Hill 2, Faith Christian 0

SUMMERVILLE - HHA picked up their seventh win by defeating Faith Christian 25-9, 27-25.

Abby Winquest 13 aces and two kills. Reagan Mobley had two aces, two assists, two digs and a kill. Candice Sawyer added two aces and a dig.

HHA (7-4, 5-1) will travel to Dorchester Academy on Thursday at 4 p.m.

B-Team Football

Clark Middle 6, Holly Hill-Roberts Middle 0 (2OT)

Montrell Chalk scored the game-winning touchdown from six yards out.

Chalk also contributed defensively with a fumble recovery. Nathaniel Rickenburger had an interception in the win.

Clark (2-1) will host Manning Middle on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
