PALMETTO STATE COLLEGE FOOTBALL: Furman drops 19-12 decision to Elon
By The Associated Press Sunday, October 04, 2009GREENVILLE — Elon’s Adam Shreiner kicked a 37-yard field goal with 2 seconds left and the Phoenix then scored on the final play of the game for a 19-12 victory over Furman on Saturday.
Furman led 12-10 until Shreiner’s kick gave Elon (4-1, 2-0 Southern Conference) a 13-12 lead. Shreiner’s kickoff was fumbled in the end zone and Elon’s Travis Greene recovered it for a touchdown for the final score.
Elon’s Scott Riddle was 35-for-48 for 374 yards and a 1-yard touchdown pass to Terrell Hudgins for a 10-6 lead with 4:03 remaining in the game.
Furman (3-2, 2-1) took a 12-10 lead on Tersoo Uhaa’s 1-yard run with 1:56 left to cap a seven-play, 73-yard drive.
Hudgins had 16 catches for 209 yards and a score.
Jerry Williams led Furman with 60 yards rushing and Jordan Sorrells was 21-for-41 for 219 yards. Adam Mims had nine catches for 82 yards.
Appalachian State beats The Citadel 30-27
CHARLESTON — Appalachian State’s Jason Vitaris kicked a 30-yard field goal in overtime to lift the Mountaineers to a 30-27 victory over The Citadel on Saturday.
Appalachian State’s Brian Quick blocked a field goal on the final play of regulation after he caught a 74-yard pass from Armanti Edwards to tie the score at 27 with 4:28 left in the game.
Van Dyke Jones ran for 81 yards and a touchdown as Citadel (2-2, 0-1) rushed for 214 yards. Bart Blanchard threw for two touchdowns, including a 29-yard pass to Luke Caldwell that gave the Bulldogs a 27-20 lead with 5:18 left.
Georgia Southern beats Wofford 26-21
SPARTANBURG — Lee Chapple threw for 187 yards and one touchdown to help Georgia Southern beat Wofford 26-21 on Saturday.
The Eagles (3-2, 2-1 Southern Conference) trailed 14-10 in the second quarter when Wofford’s Mitch Allen scored on a 3-yard run. But Georgia Southern regained the lead on a 24-yard run by Darreion Robinson, who finished with 78 yards on 13 carries.
Adam Urbano added 56 yards on the ground on 13 attempts, including a 4-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter for the Eagles. Chapple completed 25-of-28 passes, despite being sacked four times by the Terriers (1-4, 0-2).
Wofford’s Mike Rucker rushed for 95 yards on 10 carries. Allen was 4-for-9 with 83 yards passing, threw two touchdowns and had one interception.
Charleston Southern routs Savannah St. 47-10
CHARLESTON — A.J. Toscano threw two touchdown passes to lead Charleston Southern to a 47-10 win over Savannah State on Saturday.
Toscano went 21-for-26 for 230 yards and led the Buccaneers (2-3) with 78 yards rushing. Toscano had a 3-yard touchdown pass to Anthony Chalmers and he had an 8-yard passing score to Tyrese Harris in the first half.
The Buccaneers piled up 528 total yards. Gerald Stevenson got the Buccaneers off to a 14-0 lead with touchdown runs of 7 and 17 yards in the first quarter.
Ivey Antwan scored on a 1-yard run in the third quarter and Michael Jefferson caught a 6-yard pass from Jordan Belser in the fourth for the Buccaneers.
Stony Brook routs Presbyterian 52-14
STONY BROOK, N.Y. — Michael Coulter threw two touchdown passes and ran for another, as Stony Brook beat Presbyterian 52-14 on Saturday in a Big South Conference game.
Coulter connected with Donald Porter on touchdown passes of 59 and 60 yards, and the Stony Brook quarterback also scored on a 6-yard run. Porter caught four passes for 156 yards and two touchdowns. The Seawolves (2-3, 1-0) piled up 610 total yards of offense.
Brandon Miley was 17-for-23 with 146 yards, a touchdown and an interception for the Blue Hose (0-4, 0-2). Trandon Dendy added 59 yards rushing and a touchdown.
Newberry runs by No. 21 Catawba, 40-21
SALISBURY, N.C. — The Newberry College football team spoiled Homecoming for Catawba College on Saturday, rolling up 545 yards of offense — including 329 yards on the ground — in a 40-21 win.
With the victory, Newberry moves to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in South Atlantic Conference play, while Catawba drops to 3-2 and 0-2 in the SAC.
Newberry returns home for only the second time this season next week in a contest that will prove to be vital for a run at the South Atlantic Conference title and an NCAA playoff berth. Newberry hosts Mars Hill (3-2, 1-1 SAC) for Homecoming at Setzler Field at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 10.
North Greenville tops Edward Waters
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Sophomore quarterback Aaron Seigler ran in for two touchdowns and passed for another in his first career start before his hometown family and friends to help North Greenville register the first career victory for head coach Jamey Chadwell 28-0 over Edward Waters College.
North Greenville (1-5) has a quick and treacherous turnaround as they will hit the bus to Florence, Ala., on Wednesday as they travel to play 3rd-ranked University of North Alabama Thursday night, Oct. 8, at 7 p.m. UNA is coached by former Auburn University mentor Terry Bowden, the son of Florida State University legend Bobby Bowden.
