Women honored for contributions to ministry, education, community
By MARTHA ROSE BROWN, T&D Correspondent Monday, October 05, 2009"Thank you for honoring me. It is so good to be loved by God. If it hadn't been for love, this wouldn't have happened today," said Mary Lee James of Eutawville, one of nine women honored at the first Women of Essence Appreciation Gala.
The event was held at the Garden of Prayer Church's Family Life Center in Orangeburg on Sept. 26.
The gala was "designed to recognize women from all walks of life for their contributions to ministry, education and the community," gala committee member Beverly Jones said.
"These are wise women born of wise women ... and these are strong women born of strong women," she said.
Three years ago, sisters Keisha Watson and Tracy Watson watched in admiration as Oprah Winfrey honored 25 women for their roles in arts/entertainment and civil rights through her "Legends Ball" event. The Watsons began to develop their local version of a "Legends Ball" black-tie affair. Dozens of church and community members joined together to ensure the event was a success.
