DORA to present 'A Salute to the Music of Michael Jackson'
By T&D Staff Thursday, October 08, 2009The Downtown Orangeburg Revitalization Association will present "A Salute to the Music of Michael Jackson" at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 13, at Stevenson Auditorium.
The event is a "tribute to one of the most influential entertainers of all time," said Randy Etters, DORA member. "Spanning a career of 40 years, the (DORA promotions) committee felt almost everyone in the community had been touched by Michael Jackson's music. Using all local entertainers, the tribute show will highlight some of his most popular music," including "ABC," "Don't Stop Til You Get Enough," "Billie Jean," "Man in the Mirror," "Thriller" and more.
Performers will include acts from South Carolina State University, Claflin University, Orangeburg-Wilkinson High School, Denmark Technical College, Mary Jane's School of Dance and others.
"The tribute is guaranteed to do justice to the music of such a revered icon of pop culture," Etters said. "The added benefit of this event will be the appeal to such a diverse audience, essentially bringing together the community regardless of age, race or musical tastes."
DORA executive director Bernice Tribble said general admission tickets are $10 and are available at First Citizens Bank on Broughton Street and in the administrator's office at city hall on Middleton Street. Tickets are also available by calling the DORA office at 803-531-6186.
"I'm very exited," she said of the show. "We've got a lot of wonderful talent here. This is going to be a fun evening. It's a salute to Michael Jackson's music, and you know what an outstanding musician he was. And we'll slip a little moonwalk in on you."
Tribble said money raised from the event will go to DORA and its continuing plans to improve parking in downtown Orangeburg.
"Our primary focus is for parking for downtown for merchants and events at Stevenson Auditorium," she said. "By providing parking for Stevenson, we are going to make it so much more attractive for events there. Right now, that's our primary focus.
"You can come out, have a good time, and support our town and make it better."
