S.C. State up to 11th in poll

Just two weeks ago, South Carolina State head football coach Oliver “Buddy” Pough was concerned about still remaining in the Football Championship Subdivision Top 25 poll following a loss to Division I South Carolina.

On Monday, the Bulldogs found themselves closing in on the Top 10 for the first time in 27 years. The latest Sports Network poll saw voters leapfrog S.C. State from 17th to 11th following the 37-10 win over Norfolk State.

The FCS Coaches Poll had S.C. State move up four places to 12th, just nine votes behind McNeese State in 11th place. Both rankings are the highest the Bulldogs have reached nationally since finishing the 1982 season seventh in the Division I-AA polls.

Ironically, Pough was the defensive coordinator for that Bulldog team under Bill Davis.

Saturday opponent Florida A&M remained at number 22 in both polls following its 48-16 loss to the University of Miami. This marks the third straight week two Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference teams are ranked in the Top 25 polls.
