No effort to take all credit for arrests
Sunday, October 18, 2009Following is Sheriff Larry Williams’ response to the letter by Vicki B. Holmes:
I try my level best when releasing information as related to crimes in Orangeburg County to keep sensitive information that could be detrimental to citizens in my county away from print. I often use the word collaborative in reference to the various sources of information that aid us in an arrest or the conviction of individuals that have committed crimes.
I would be the first to say that all crimes are solved by the community at large because without good citizens like yourself, Mr. Holmes, and others, no crime would be solved. Being deceptive or dramatic with the media is not indicative of my administration or what we can do here at the sheriff’s office, but my approach is to be less dramatic and reserved when talking with the media about citizen involvement in solving crimes.
I offer my sincere apologies if there were any ill feelings in regard to the article that was released. I am responsible for the content provided to the media and it was not done to showcase a superpower of the Orangeburg County Sheriff’s Office. However, the article was intended to express the collaborative efforts that no agency or no governmental entity is greater than the people it serves.
I thank you very much.
