Remarks were meant as a compliment

As an orthodox, Chassidic Jew, I’m about as Jewish as it gets. And, frankly, in my opinion these two representatives said nothing out of line. I believe their remarks were meant as a compliment — something that government should take heed of. The best Jewish businessmen with whom I’ve had the honor of doing business exemplify this dictum. Our current economic malaise and governmental budget catastrophes occurred because business and government leaders took their eyes off the ball in the area of cost containment. The best and most practical path through the health care crisis? Cost reduction.

There is an old Jewish saying in response to when someone gives you a blessing for good luck or success — “Amen, from your mouth to G-d’s ear.” I believe it applies here.

— Moshe Morgenstern,

Morristown, N.J.
