Vance, Cordova seats to be filled by write-ins
By TUCKER LYON, T&D Government Writer Friday, October 23, 2009Only one candidate filed for the two seats open on Vance Town Council, meaning the Nov. 3 nonpartisan municipal election will be decided by a write-in.
Also, a write-in vote will determine the election in Cordova, where the mayor and all four Town Council members filed as write-ins, rather than during the regular filing period. No names will be on the ballot.
Barbara Montgomery, who filed as a Town Council candidate before the deadline, is the only name on the Vance ballot. Council incumbents Arletta Rowe and James White Jr., whose four-year terms are expiring, are not seeking re-election. Also, no one filed as a write-in candidate.
The lone candidate for mayor, Michael Aiken, has automatically been declared the winner.
“Barbara Montgomery is the only one on the ballot,” said Garry Baum, public information director for the South Carolina Election Commission. “There will be two places for a write-in candidate.”
In the town of Cordova, none of the five council incumbents filed for re-election before the deadline to be on the ballot. However, all five did file as write-in candidates. Mayor James V. Martin and council members Richard E. Fogle, Richard B. Fogle, Jo Ann Mooney and James Preveaux have filed as write-ins.
Vance, with a population of 208, has 117 registered voters.
Cordova, with a population is 157, has 81 registered voters.
