$32,500, safe stolen from SCSU building

A safe containing $32,500 was reported stolen from a South Carolina State University dining hall last week.

S.C. State Police Chief Michael Bartley said a staff member reported on Oct. 19 the safe was removed from his office. The stolen safe was valued at $1,400.

Bartley said the money is the property of Sodexho, an independent contractor that manages S.C. State's dining services.

Attempts to get further comment from the university regarding the stolen money were unsuccessful Thursday afternoon.

The theft occurred sometime between Oct. 17 and Oct. 19 in Washington Dining Hall, according to an S.C. State police incident report.

The Times and Democrat obtained the incident report Thursday through a S.C. Freedom of Information Act request.

A separate incident report details a shooting Wednesday evening in a parking lot.

At around 8 p.m., a 24-year-old man was shot in the left thigh at the University Village Apartments parking lot off Chestnut Street. Bartley said the wounded man has already been treated and released from a local hospital.

"We met with some people that said a young man had been involved in a scuffle and a gunshot was fired," Bartley said.

Bartley says the incident won't change security plans for S.C. State's Homecoming festivities this weekend.

"We heighten our security for any event we have on campus. We feel we'll have ample law enforcement there to cover those people that come to enjoy the festivities," he said.

" The T&D should ask about a previous theft -- a welding torch that occurred a week or so before. A welding torch - a safe? Use your imagination! "
