Gresham Barrett’s strong life experiences give him a unique conservative perspective on the challenges facing South Carolina and how to fix them.

Born and raised in Westminster, Gresham Barrett’s parents instilled in him the common sense conservative values he carries with him today – faith in God, service to others, hard work, devotion to family, love of country, individual freedom and personal responsibility.

In high school, Barrett lettered in football and baseball, and met the love of his life, Natalie. Gresham went on to earn a Bachelors degree from South Carolina’s Historic Military College, The Citadel. After graduation, he proudly served four and a-half years in the United States Army – First Cavalry Division, Ft. Hood, Texas. Gresham was honored to be named Executive Officer for the MRLS (Multiple Rocket Launch System) Battery.

In 1987, Gresham completed his military service and returned home to Westminster to help run the family business. A few years later, Barrett bought the family furniture store from his father and became a successful small business owner. Gresham took his real world experience and put it to work for the people of South Carolina.

First elected to the State House of Representatives in 1996, Gresham Barrett set out to bring a new, more effective brand of conservative leadership to Columbia. He led the successful fight to ban partial birth abortion in South Carolina, stood up for the rights of hard-working taxpayers and took on the big spenders in the State House.

In Congress, Gresham has a well-earned reputation for being a rock solid conservative. The American Conservative Union gave Gresham their second-highest conservative score, while National Journal ranked him the fourth most conservative member of the U.S. House of Representatives. Recently, the Club for Growth named Gresham a “Defender of Economic Freedom.” Because of Gresham’s strong leadership against stimulus spending, cash for clunkers and wasteful Democrat programs, Congressional Quarterly ranked him the second most opposed to President Obama of any Congressman in the country.

Gresham has repeatedly earned the endorsements of the National Rifle Association, the National Federation of Independent Businesses and the National Right to Life Committee. For his commitment to protecting the best interests of the taxpayers, the National Taxpayers Union has repeatedly named Gresham Barrett a “Taxpayer’s Friend.”

Gresham and his wife Natalie have three children – Madison, Jeb and Ross – and feel blessed to live in their hometown of Westminster.
