Veterans Memorial ceremony uplifting

I have just returned from a MOST uplifting experience: the dedication of the Orangeburg Veterans Memorial Park. The hundreds in attendance were not deterred by the inclement weather; the program was extremely well planned and the platform party performed exceptionally well. I am certain that those in attendance felt proud to call Orangeburg home.

Master of Ceremonies Tom Harrison, Mayor Paul Miller, the Jarvis Brothers, Lt. Col. Louie Boone, the veteran organizations, the OWHS AFJROTC, and, of course, the outstanding speech given by Orangeburg native Lt. Gen. Buck Shuler, were superb!

Kudos, as well, to the Parks & Recreation Department for the max effort put forth that contributed immeasurably to the program’s success.

I wold be remiss if I did not thank those individuals and companies that donated the flag poles. From these will fly the flags of our armed forces as well as the flag of our nation.

Finally, I encourage everyone to remember those serving in our armed forces in their prayers and, when possible, personally say thanks for their many sacrifices.

— Jay Pearson Lt. Colonel, USAF-retired Orangeburg
