Man gets 15 years in shooting death
By T&D Staff Wednesday, November 18, 2009An Orangeburg man will spend the next 15 years in prison after pleading guilty to shooting an acquaintance in the back of the head.
Anthony Tyrone Holman, 36, of 155 High Point Circle, Orangeburg, pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter in connection with the death of Samuel “Cass” Jamison III in July 2008.
“The victim, Samuel Jamison, was seated in the front seat of the vehicle. He was shot one time in the back of the head,” said First Circuit Deputy Solicitor Tommy Scott.
“The defendant gave a statement to police that the gun accidentally discharged and he did not intend to shoot the victim,” Scott said.
Holman was originally charged with murder in connection with the death, but that charge was reduced. Scott said witnesses reported there was no robbery and no argument.
Holman could have received a sentence of between two and 30 years.
Margaret Hinds, Holman’s attorney, said, “We’re sorry for the family’s loss, and Mr. Holman took responsibility.”
The incident occurred at mid-afternoon on Jamison Avenue. Deputies responding to a call about a shot fired in the neighborhood found Jamison’s body in the passenger seat of a Chevrolet Tahoe.
Holman was arrested nearby while a crowd of about 100 gathered to watch investigators search the Tahoe for evidence.
The 23-year-old Jamison worked at the Sara Lee Bakery and was thinking about buying a car when he was killed, his mother has said.
