Hands-on project teaching students about environment
By MINNIE MILLER, T&D Garden Columnist | Leave a CommentBAMBERG, S.C. – Students in Cody Slaughter’s environmental studies class at Bamberg-Ehrhardt High School are really getting to the root of the subject. Their time spent inside in class covering the required curriculum and book learning is paired with several hours each week in an outdoor classroom. Building a compost heap, pulling weeds, spreading manure, planting seeds and caring for an up-and-coming crop of okra has allowed Slaughter’s students to get down and dirty.
The class of 17 juniors and seniors is getting practical, hands-on experience with environmental factors by reestablishing a garden plot and refurbishing an idle 20-foot by 50-foot greenhouse behind the school. Read More »
