THE WHITE-TAILED DEER

The white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) is the premier big-game species in the United States. Annually, millions of sportsmen take to the woods in pursuit of the deer with a flag-like tail.

OLD SPLIT HOOF TEACHES A LESSON

It was cold even in the midday of December some 20 years ago in the swamp the locals called Deep Bottom. My best hunting buddy, Mike Taylor, and I had driven to Ruffin in the predawn just as we had done hundreds of times before after he and his father (Robin) Bo had introduced me to deer hunting in 1970.

MANY MEMORIES FROM OPENING DAYS

When I think bout deer hunting, I imagine sitting in a tall gum tree overlooking an oak flat. The sky is that deep, clear blue that we only get when the weather has just enough chill to it to need a light jacket, even in the early afternoon. I can see that big buck as he strolls along the edge, looking for does.

THE '08 OUTLOOK

Year in and year out, a close look at the Boone and Crockett record books will show there are certain areas of the country that will consistently produce big deer.

FAWNS ARE NOT 'LOST'; DON'T ADOPT THEM

Deer don’t make good pets, so don’t adopt a ‘lost’ fawn.
If a deer fawn is found alone in the woods, leave it there, advises a state wildlife biologist. Its mother has not abandoned it; she is probably nearby.

DEER HARVEST UP FIRST TIME IN 5 YEARS

Results of the 2007 Deer Hunter Survey conducted by the S.C. Department of Natural Resources indicate that the statewide harvest of deer last season totaled 239,193, an increase of 7 percent over 2006 and the first increase in harvest in five years.

THE HISTORY OF DEER IN SOUTH CAROLINA

In pre-Columbian times much of South Carolina’s landscape was composed of mature hardwood and longleaf pine forest habitats. Deer were statewide in distribution but their overall densities could best be described as moderate. These moderate densities resulted from the lack of optimum habitat diversity, for deer, that was associated with historic, mature forests.
